{October 26, 2009}   blog entry #14

Language center (2003) illustrated that results in a research paper

  • If raw data is present the use of an appendix is a format used to enable the reader to understand them
  • Explanatory texts should include the Importance of the results , simplicity, highlighting significant trends and relations
  • The common problem is that too much text can be used to make the results look irrelevant
  • Basic  2  ways of presenting data  are
    •  representing all the data obtained from the results  and discussion
    • Representing part of the data and then discussing it

But the representational of results depends on the quantity of data obtained

Biology department (2002) stated that in Discussion section should reflect

  •  the interpretation of the results obtained,  which should be  connected to the introduction by answering the hypothesis posed and the literature cited
  1. If results agree with what you have shown
  2. If it agrees with previous research and the interpretation of what the results indicate?
  3. Potential research topics
  • Use of active voice
  • Organize the discussion in the same way the results were found
  • Don’t introduce new results

Writing Center (2007) stated that the Conclusion

  • Is the last  word on the subject
  • Summarize thoughts, demonstrate important ideas

Strategies to write an effective conclusion

  • Return to the theme in the introduction
  • Include a brief summary of the main ideas of the paper
  • Propose a cause of action, a solution to the issue
  • Point to broader implications

What to avoid

  • Stating the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion.
  • Introducing a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion.
  • Ending with a rephrased thesis statement without any substantive changes.
  • Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest of an analytical paper.
  • Including evidence (quotations, statistics, etc.) that should be in the body of the paper.

In addition to the above articles

Shuttle worth(2009)  mentioned that in the Results

  • Quantitative research is represented through numerical value
  • Qualitative research is a broader discussion of trends
  • Better to include tables and graphs in the appendix in raw data

Caprette stated that in the Discussion

  • Suggest future  directions so as to how the experiment might be modified to accomplish another objective
  • Recommendations for specific papers will provide additional suggestions
  • Refer to work done  by specific individuals

The writing center mentioned that in the conclusion we should

  • Summarize argument
  • Discuss what about the topic needs further research
