What I learnt from peer reviewing:

1. Writing and editing

  • The people I edited have different writing styles to suit their audiences, as well as make their paper flow with some exceptions to the terms that they have targeted acording the genre.
  • Editing is a lot of work becasue what may seem appealing to the author may not be understood by me
  • when ediditng you first need to read through the paper at least twice and then begin to make comments so as to gage the  tone of the writer
  • there is no one way for making a paper flow as long as the ideas are made clear and not confusing

2. My actual research paper

  • I need to watch my sentence construction and grammar
  • It needs more work and analysis of sources carefully so that the audience doesnt take time in understanding what I am trying to say
  • It needs constant self editing
  • I have to keep my audience in mind and refer to my thesis statement when I feel like I am moving away from my topic
  • Evaluate the depth of my sources and relevance to the paper
  • My paper needs a structured literature review that ,makes my voice heard
  • method section is in past tense not present

    Queer (strange/odd) theory

    • is the re-evaluation of identity politics and categories of homosexual and heterosexual

    Feminist theory

    • critique of male power and ideology
    • belief of equity among gender

    In the color purple

The women who showed feminism were Shug Avery and Sophie in the beginning of the book. By  paving way for Mary Agnes to claim her name and Celie to stand up to Mr Albert.

Feminist theory was observed when Shug Avery wanted her father to accept her for the sinner she was. As he believed that women can’t base their lives on liberation and sexual identity. While Nettie fought to be literate under her step fathers watch; but Celie was ill treated into being robbed the right to be loved, educated and sexually pleasured.  Her sister Nettie taught her to read and write even though it was against Mr. Albert’s wishes. When Shug Avery learnt that Celie had grown up submitting to the male s ideology of thinking and torture, she decided to take it upon her to teach her that life is full of taking what is rightfully yours with open arms. The queer theory was shown when Shug Avery began to have sexual encounters with Celie. Celie began to develop feelings towards Shug and had never felt them before. She then understood that she was attracted to Shug because each time she saw her with any other man she felt jealous and wondered if they loved her the same way she did. In doing so, she questioned her sexuality because of her past experiences with men and sexual encounters. Now that she found a woman who embraced her with kindness and love, she thought differently of what love and sex meant. Therefore, found it enlightening to be with a woman than men.

    Middle sex

It transits away from feminism but moves to queer theory.

Calliopine Helen Stephanides was born with a fifth chromosome, which wasn’t detected when she was young. Hence she was raised as a girl but thought and felt like a boy. The doctor who delivered her didn’t notice she had two sexual organs and passed her as a girl. The most frightening thing was how she discovered her identity, in her thoughts as a child she knew something was wrong but couldn’t put a finger to it. Though her parents knew before her birth that this fifth chromosome was genetic but weren’t sure which generation would deal with it. In Calliopines journey to self she didn’t know which category to label herself as she felt afraid to open up to the world, as the doctors were confused on how to handle her case. But she was bisexual at adolescence as she slept with both sexes.

    {November 18, 2009}   Poem #27

    Blank verse

    Who defines normal and strange?

    Who agrees to accept it?

Is it self indulgence that time perceives it?

Is there a right moment to open the closet?

Why do I feel afraid to turn the knob?

    Yet I sense closure approaching,

But moved to be enchanted differently,

For my identity is known to self destruction,

I therefore prefer to be alone , trapped and nameless.

    {November 18, 2009}   Poem #26

    sex and gender

    Gender identity-psychological sense of self

    Gender expression-communication of gender

Based my poem on my gender identity as a reflection of atmospheric influence on the past few years.

    Ballad

    My identity, in crossroads

At adolescence my flow was webbed

Wuthin a single sex living space

    Observant of their interactions

Puzzled by my abilities to with stand temptation

Familiar with their tone, gestures and weight

    Instantaneoulsy changed friendships like relationships

Easily tired, irritated and in search of the ideal worthiness

I would stroke their ego, once in depth

    Withdrawal felt accommodating

Approached by the male I would reject

But wonder what an encounter with the same be

    Pondering my thoughts with age

I was never satisfied with neither

    Currently hesitating the leap

    {November 9, 2009}   Poem #25-Blank verse

You sure is ugly, Miss  Celie!!!

    At first glance, I’m judgemantal

    Beneath the surface

    Is a trapped, troubled woman

    Who never knew self

End the differentiation of want and need

Beauty is only skin deep, so is the heart of stone

Afraid if a crack is noticed the cut is deepened

I resent your willingness to answer to master,

Even if his actions are unethical

To let another woman tag you

Then, What defines beauty as ugliness?

Is it your physical appearance or deeds

You delayed to answer to your husbands call

As I observe your willingness to sacrifice

You suffer a heart thorne without creation

    The color purple

As anticing the book may be the movie is worth watching. We see Celie as an orphan and innocent archetype because she is always seeking the meaning of love, peace and a place to call home. As a child she hass endured sexual assaults from her step father who refuses to see her as child but a woman who needs to taught her rigthful place. Tormenting her to see her self as ugly inside and out. Which makes me wonder, what defines ugly. Is it the physical aspect of nature or the being that we build ourselves into. As we see Sophie realting to Celie how she used to fight the male dominators in her fathers house but wont allow it in her own home. We begin to see Sophie as a warrior achytype when she fights and talks back to Harpo when he wanted to show him who was the master of their house.

The two characters of Sophie and Celie define ugly as who and what we let people allow to do to us. Therefore we have a choice to mould and change the perspection of ourselves. Sophie was ugly when she used violence to voice her opinions and Celie was ugly not to act upon her suffering and ill treatment. Though she may have looked ugly she had a lot of strength in her  to endure all the heartache and suffering. My theme for the poem is taken from the first moment Shug Avery layed her eyes on Celie and remarked ‘you sure is ugly… ‘ This is because , it aint one of the first remarks you would expect a stranger to say straight to your face.

    Didatic

The journey seemed long and rocky

Now that I have been through it

    knowledge is all I have,

    Yestedays’ galore is todays triumph

    Tomorrows challenge is my victory

For I have the courage to live both worlds

    Yesterday, Tommorrow as one

    {November 2, 2009}   blog entry# 20

    the master of two worlds

This is when the hero has managed to master the inner and outter world from his own zone.

In Lord of the Rings, Aragorn, Isildur’s heir, takes the his rightful position on the throne of Gondor and is crowned King. He receives the responsibility of protection in the world as Gandalf passes from Middle Earth.

Another example is when siddhartha is made the keeper of the ferryboat by the origional owner, after he understood how to listen and talk to the river whn he is looking for answers to the unanswerable questions of the world therefore using natures aid to complete the the Journey.

The poem  found was written by peter franklin (2000) titled ‘go to the river’

can sing of a river, echoing its ceaseless flow,

The sound as it gurgles round rocks

    Then rushes through occasional locks

By flowered meadows where rushes grow.

I can write of a river with ever flowing words,

Tell how dappled evening light shines

As burnished gold from distant mines,

Use lurid rhymes to paint those water birds.

But if you have never seen that glory,

Not heard the rush of water on stone.

Nor seen a Kingfisher dive from the sky.

None of this will paint the full story

That is beyond words and music alone.

Sit quiet with a river, then you’ll know why

I chose this poem because it reflected the concept of experience is the best teacher. Two worlds are obtained form this, one where you were innocent and didnt know much of the worlds expectations. But once you experience them life is obtained and viewed from a different perspective because what we learn lives with us until we die. Therefore the worlds of knowing and innocence can be relived but with a greater aspect to determination and courage. Especially when, how and why use them.

    {October 30, 2009}

    Crossing of the return threshold

This final transition is a symbolic rebirth back into the ‘real world’. Where we find our selves confused of what would become of us and which world would we choose to live in. From what we have learnt which is relevant and significant to us. But the journey doesnt seem to be over yet because adapting to it is a challenge and intimidaitng.   For example after Celie found out her mother had left her some wealth. It was hard for her because all her life she had nothing, yet she only abandoned her self to an abusive life that held her together.

To start over again into building a new life of freedom and claim to herself was unthinkable. As she never knew the definition of freedom because she never experienced it. The poem I found was

Old Man Leaves Party by Mark Strand

It was clear when I left the party

That though I was over eighty I still had

A beautiful body. The moon shone down as it will

On moments of deep introspection. The wind held its breath.

And look, somebody left a mirror leaning against a tree.

Making sure that I was alone, I took off my shirt.

The flowers of bear grass nodded their moonwashed heads.

I took off my pants and the magpies circled the redwoods.

Down in the valley the creaking river was flowing once more.

How strange that I should stand in the wilds alone with my body.

I know what you are thinking. I was like you once. But now

With so much before me, so many emerald trees, and

Weed-whitened fields, mountains and lakes, how could I not

Be only myself, this dream of flesh, from moment to moment?

This poem illustrated the weakness of the flesh no matter how close it is to reaching its goal. There are only two outcomes submission and self control, they can never work together. The world is only enough for one.
